 8:17am, 8 July 2025

Female leukemia is a viral disease of felines. This disease can cause leukemia and lymphoid swelling, and is a carcinogenic infectious disease.

【Symptoms】

Kittens under four months have a higher sensitivity to cat leukemia. More than half of the cats will develop antibody to fight themselves after being infected with this disease, but 30% to 50% of cats will still develop the disease after being infected. Clinically, sick cats can be seen with symptoms such as anemia, decreased leukocytes, cough, vomiting, mental loss of appetite, and chronic wasting weight loss. The cat's own immune system function will also be destroyed, resulting in immune insufficiency. In the early stages of stomatitis, gingivitis, enteritis, and nephritis will gradually worsen and be accompanied by co-infection of other diseases. If the tumor appears in the digestive tract, it can be detected during palpation. If the tumor appears in the thymus, it will often lead to breathing, swallowing dysphagia and pleural effusion.

Treatment Methods for Female Leukemia

【Pathogens and Transmission】

The pathogen of female leukemia is Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). In addition to being able to spread horizontally through the sick cat's saliva, milk, nasal secretions, feces and urine, it can also be transmitted vertically from the female cat to the offspring through the uterus; in addition, blood-sucking insects and fighting bites can also cause infection.

【Prevention and Treatment】

There is currently no effective prevention and treatment method. If a cat is determined to be positive for menstrual blood test, it is necessary to isolate it to avoid infecting other cats, and suspicious cats must also be isolated and repeatedly checked for diagnosis; disinfectants such as alcohol, boiling water, carbolic acid, etc. can all eliminate this virus.
